What makes EntoQ the preferred partner to obtain an insect farming facility and make insect breeding and rearing at scale profitable.

    Our viewpoint

Current breeding systems are lacking knowledge on issues that seemed to be uncontrollable – such as sex ratio of the starting population. Nor do they have sufficient knowhow to simulate the natural habitat and behaviors of insects under artificial conditions. This is key to optimize breeding behavior like lekking, mating, egg laying, … to reach the highest possible qualitative output of eggs per cage, in the shortest possible time, without negative impact on the insects and protein output. Besides production, the market has new demands for reproducibility through a standardized, automated farming infrastructure. This helps breeding and rearing farmers to significantly increase their yields.

    The challenge

The EntoQ concept was conceived with the ambition to go much further than the traditional production of breeding cages. Its distinctive approach is a practical data driven and all-in-one collaborative concept. To bridge the gap between upcoming demand and supply, the market needs a future-proof technology to lift volumes, husbandry- and cost-efficiency, and (food)safety to the next level. A sufficiently large supply at a price-competitive level with soy and fishmeal would be a tipping point for the protein market to switch to this more sustainable alternative.

    The EntoQ concept

EntoQ is a full-service concept based on 4 pillars.

    1. Intelligent breeding management

including software that monitors and directs the (semi-)automated process. A cloud platform allows the user to add its infrastructure settings for personalized advice, based upon anonymous best practices.

    Innovative techniques

    • Use of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning
      • to compose mating population according to desired male/female ratio
      • to exclude unwanted insects from the mating population based on deviations from standard phenotype
      • to select insects in a mating population based on their size.

    2. A full range of high-quality hardware

including separation systems, fly cages, pupa rooms, … fully equipped and calibrated with the necessary sensors and actuators. A retrofitting service is possible.

    3. Professional and dedicated support and training

is included in the set-up and subscription fee. This support is onsite, via the user portal and technical manuals. Via the portal, farmers get personalized and these recommendations are based on latest scientific and practical knowledge via large databases of insect farming results, provided anonymously by affiliated farmers.

    4. Single point of contact

service is assured to minimize the operational burden for the farmer.
